Ballenberg Tour:

Get a closer look: this tour introduces you to working and everyday life in rural Switzerland. Take a peek inside living quarters and bedrooms, experience a typical day for a family in times past, see what’s growing in the vegetable garden, and find out more about the crafts of our ancestors and their ingenuity in the face of scarce resources.

Alpine farming:

An idyllic miniature Alpine world: ever since Heidi, the Swiss Alps have been synonymous the world over with unique natural beauty, tranquillity and fortitude. However, life in the Alps wasn’t always so idyllic. Our guides will immerse you in the world of the Alps, where they’ll introduce you to the light and dark side of Alpine life and explain how it varied from region to region.

Architecture:

The architecture of rural Switzerland is extremely diverse. At the Swiss Open-Air Museum, you can explore over 100 buildings from eve-
ry region of Switzerland. Our guides put the regional buildings in their social, historical and economic context and describe the many small details that had a major impact on Alpine life.

Crafts:

Join our guides as they introduce you to a variety of crafts, some almost forgotten and some still indispensable to this day. A visit to the open-air museum’s various workshops reveals how traditions sur-
vive and how those skills can be harnessed in new ways today. Watch our artisans at work and marvel at their ability and skills.

Healing herbs:

Gain a fascinating insight into the effects of healing herbs, how they were once used and how they are still used today. Take a wander through the open-air museum’s herb garden and explore the historical pharmacy.
Our museum pharmacists have an encyclopaedic knowledge of garden and
kitchen herbs, as well as how to prepare and use them. Ask them anything!

Through courtyard and garden:

Dried, smoked, preserved or buried: the pride of every good farmer’s wife was in the cellar and ensured the family’s survival throughout the harsh winter. Join us for a look around our varied gardens and historical kitchens and experience a working day from the distant past.

Our mini package consists of a one-hour tour of the Ballenberg site. Accompanied by our tour guides, you can take a peek inside parlours and bedrooms, and experience a typical day for a family in times past. At lunch, you’ll be treated to a delicious meal of your choice at one of the Ballenberg eateries. 

Ballenberg Pauschale maxi

With the Ballenberg maxi package, you can explore the Ballenberg site with our knowledgeable, expert staff in the course of a two-hour guided tour. Take a peek inside parlours and bedrooms, experience a typical day for a family in times past, see what’s growing in the vegetable garden, and find out more about the crafts of our ancestors and their ingenuity in the face of scarce resources. During the tour, you can enjoy a bite to eat at one of our tasting sessions, where you can try all sorts of Ballenberg produce. Then, at lunch, you’ll be treated to a delicious meal of your choice at one of the Ballenberg eateries.

On one of our themed tours, you can explore the Ballenberg site, take a peek inside kitchens and parlours of historic buildings, learn about working and everyday life in rural Switzerland and experience a typical day for a family in times long forgotten.

During the tour, you can treat yourself to a bite to eat at one of our tasting sessions and sample some regional produce or home-made Ballenberg specialities. At lunch, you can enjoy a delicious meal at one of the Ballenberg eateries.

This will leave you feeling energised for your workshop in the afternoon, which will share the theme of your guided tour. Fancy trying your hand at "sgraffito" scratch art, making Ziger cheese or baking cakes and roasting coffee in a historical kitchen? Or perhaps you’d prefer woodcarving, straw weaving or mixing a wondrous tincture with Ballenberg’s pharmacists? Which workshop appeals to you the most?
